Functional Neurology in Australasia

The Australasian Academy of Functional Neurology (AAFN) is a multi-disciplinary, membership-based, professional organisation. It is comprised of medical and varied allied health practitioners. The purpose of the AAFN is to represent and promote the burgeoning field of functional neurology/neuroscience in the Australasia region and assist the clinical advancement of evidence-based functional neuroscience within health care practices.

The following professions are currently represented within AAFN:

  • Chiropractors
  • General medical practitioners
  • Psychologists
  • Nurses
  • Osteopaths
  • Students currently enrolled in undergraduate Allied Health programs
  • Nurse-practitioners

Each practitioner works solely within the scope of their specific registered profession and registration guidelines.


  1. Practitioners listed on AAFNs website, and lecturers that present at AAFN events, are not medically trained or medically registered within Australia (unless clearly indicated).
  2. All content presented (clinical, research or theoretical) relating to functional neurology/neuroscience, though sourced from current scientific literature as much as possible, is not meant to convey a medically trained opinion, or specifically a medical neurologist expert opinion on topics presented.
  3. Patients who attend for functional neurology services should seek a second opinion from a registered specialist neurologist or medical practitioner, if they wish to do so, prior to commencing treatment.
